NB4T x Phyla

Just for Urbanscapes 2016, JUICE Malaysia’s Editor, AOM, and Raising the Bar head honcho, Jin Hackman, are bringing back The Night Before Tomorrow (NB4T) for its fourth edition since the joint launch of +2dB’s and VMPRMYTH’s respective EPs two years ago. NB4T is a club night-cum-gig series that aspires to bring an alternative to the nightlife scene by pushing forward electronic and dance genres that are atypically not the norm in Kuala Lumpur – past events had showcased juke, kitschy nu city pop a la tofubeats, darkwave, trap, and of course, the obligatory bass music in all its varieties, among others. With that in mind, The Bee, Publika – for only one night – is to be transformed into a dancefloor-ready gig space, and no, not the kind you’re used to.

This edition’s curation of acts goes regional with its headlining showcase; Singapore-based label Phyla has been at the forefront of the island-state’s underground, but just like their discography, they aren’t limited to just within their city as their lineup for the show includes LA’s Unconventional Science alongside Singaporeans Harv, Fzpz, and Fauxe. Then, we have one of the founding members of the Philippines’ BuwanBuwan Collective and a Manila household name in his own right, beat scene luminary Similarobjects, to deliver a live set that sees him controlling both sounds and visuals. Lastly, Hong Kong beatsmith and wordsmith J-Hoon will play a show that combines live performance of his rap cuts with a DJ set – think Low End Theory alumnus Jonwayne.

On the local front, superduo Home Court – consisting of DJ-electronic musician Dae Kim and cult favourite rapper Yang Ariff – will tease fans further with a sneak peek into their future output after the ceremonious debut single ‘Crashed Satellite’. Expect beatmaker and occasional DJ Mushroom Buttons to spin a set that will get you on an 808 bender, with a good amount of footwork thrown in. Fans of the London sound, Akhyla and ATTAGIRL member Fatim would put an impression on you with her selection of deep, dark bass-y tunes. While newcomer Santaroena is still a fledgling member of the beat scene, his live set is arguably more polished than some who came before him. Finally, Orang malaya is a much buzzed about rapper-producer whose tracks are aesthetically in line with the Atlanta scene – debauched, sometimes melancholic lyrics over trap beats that oscillate from gloomy to turnt up.

Visual collective The Tomoe – responsible for JUICE 13th Anniversary’s visual mapping and interactive audiovisual installation – will provide visuals for the night.
